I love the idea of making events (be they presidential debates, the inauguration or athletic events) a communal experience.

The only thing TNT could do better would to give people the option to select from a list of various audio commentaries: comedian (Chris Rock), coach (Bill Walton), legend (Kareem Abdul Jabbar), musician/actor (Jamie Foxx), international experts, etc. C’mon, this would be fun. Imagine a watching The Masters golf tournament with Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog doing the commentary. I’d pay for that!

One of my worst traits is eavesdropping on conversations while in public places: restaurants, stores, walking down the street. Drives my wife crazy. It’s so entertaining to hear little, personal snippets of stories without intruding or affecting the conversation.

Apparently I’m not the only one. Artist and computer scientist Jonathan Harris launched a computer program that monitors and captures the “mood” of the Internet. His system scans blogs throughout the world every few minutes looking for entries including the words “I feel…” or “I am feeling…” Grabbing nearly 20,000 feelings/entries per day, his system includes over 7.5 million entries. So then what?

His elaborate database of emotions is fed into a visual interface available at www.WeFeelFine.org. Definitely check out his web site to really understand and appreciate it. The system allows to view results by feeling, gender, age, location and weather. Yep, weather.

Below is his “The Web’s secret stories” presentation at the 2007 TED Conference:

Social media is oftentimes perceived as a replacement or threat to traditional Creatives charged with developing new campaigns and advertisements. It’s true: technology has lowered the threshold to producing video by anyone with a creative bee in their bonnet. But let’s not throw the baby out with the baby water. Let’s look at what social media offers to learn how Creatives can leverage it for their own good.

Video game maker Electronic Arts discovered the Tiger Woods “Jesus Shot” video on YouTube where a gamer somewhat makes fun of EA allowing Tiger to walk on water and hit a golf ball from the middle of a pond. Could be perceived as a glitch in the game. I mean, come on, Tiger’s good, but everyone knows cats don’t like water.

EA capitalizes on the YouTube video and “responds” by releasing a new video showing Tiger walking onto the pond and hitting a golf ball. The video ends with “It’s not a glitch. He’s just that good.” Brilliant. They convert a annoying situation into a creative epiphany that ends up being a fantastic commercial. Oh, and they post the commercial to YouTube, of course, generating 80,000 views in 2-days. Now THAT’S being creative.
